ViON Meets FedRAMP Security Requirements While Reducing Costs

The Challenge

ViON’s automation platform offers government customers a single destination to research, compare, buy, and manage as-a-service technologies from multiple manufacturers. There is no vendor lock-in.  ViON was hosting its platform in a co-location facility using an infrastructure that required ongoing management by ViON staff. To comply with government security requirements and satisfy customer needs, ViON needed to migrate the platform to a cloud environment that was authorized by the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) for use by Federal agencies.

At the same time, ViON had three goals:

  1. Save money for monthly hosting costs
  2. Shift the management of the underlying infrastructure  and network to a third party while achieving 99.9% uptime
  3. Redeploy its IT resources on more strategic activities

The Solution

ViON partnered with ORock to migrate its automation platform from the existing infrastructure provider into the ORockCloud, which is authorized by FedRAMP at the
Moderate impact level, satisfying 325 security controls. Next, ViON and ORock discussed and agreed upon Service Level Agreements that ensured high availability and the fastest restoration of service. ViON worked with ORock to develop the process and procedures for application updates and planned maintenance schedules in support of FedRAMP-mandated security patches.

ORock’s team of US based engineers collaborated with ViON’s IT personnel to architect and build a secure, reliable, and scalable multi-tenant hosting environment for ViON within the ORockCloud. ORock provided professional services to assist with the migration of ViON’s automation platform into the ORockCloud. Additionally, ORock customized the environment using a managed firewall to meet ViON’s unique needs.

Once the migration was complete, the ORock Network Operations Center assumed full responsibility for managing the underlying infrastructure and the new managed firewall, relieving ViON of the burden of maintaining the network. This approach improved the security and compliance profile of ViON’s automation platform and reduced the management burden on the company’s IT staff. At the same time, ViON realized a significant cost reduction, saving the company 68% over its previous hosting contract.

The Results

  • Migrated four (4) application suites, comprising ViON’s automation platform, to a FedRAMP authorized cloud to meet customer security and compliance requirements within 30 days
  • Reduced cloud hosting costs by 68%

  • Reduced ViON support staff by 1.5 Full Time Equivalents (FTE) by transferring NOC and SOC responsibilities to ORock

ORock enabled ViON to comply with FedRAMP requirements to support our Federal government customers while saving money and reducing overhead. By migrating to the ORockCloud, ViON was able to focus on our primary mission of supporting the customer as well as redirect our resources and capital to more strategic development efforts.
